Dr. Shaila Pervin works as a Senior Machine Learning Engineer in Foxtel Group.

Shaila was born and raised in Pabna, Bangladesh and left home at the age of 18 to the capital city of Dhaka to pursue her bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering from BUET.

She then moved to Australia in 2009 to pursue PhD in Information Technology from Monash University.

After PhD, Shaila worked as a Research Scientist at IBM Research Australia for seven years. At IBM, she was involved in various high-value projects across different industry verticals, such as Government, Education, and Insurance She worked on different topics such as Cognitive Analytics, Conversational AI, Risk and Compliance, and Natural Language Processing (NLP).

The experience in IBM also led her to co-invent 22 US patents to date.

Shaila also got the opportunity to participate in IBM’s corporate social responsibility initiatives in the Czech Republic and Paraguay.

After her tenure at IBM Research, she joined Capgemini Invent as a Data Science Manager, where she helped clients on their journey towards data transformation by providing consulting advisory on data strategies.

Currently, she has the opportunity to apply her research and consultancy expertise in Foxtel Group, where she is working on personalised recommendation and search capability for the OTT platforms of the organisation.

Apart from her professional achievements, she enjoys singing, yoga, meditation, hiking, exploring new places, and experiencing new things.

1. What Mindful AI means to you?
Mindful AI can be seen as the development of AI that is intentional with a deep awareness of its implications and ensures its integration into society in thoughtful and beneficial way.

2. What AI-related challenge resonates the most with you?
AI ethics needs a general framework, but customisation for specific applications ensures ethical adherence. An adaptable and automated framework that covers the AI product’s entire lifecycle is crucial.

3. Which of our Initiatives do you resonate the most with?
Hosting The Mindful AI Manifesto Discussion Forum as it creates the opportunity for continuous evolution, diverse perscpective, and accountability.

4. Why do you think The Mindful AI movement is important?
The Mindful AI movement champions a sustainable approach to AI, considering its long-term effects on the economy, environment, and human well-being.

5. What final message would you like to share?
In our journey towards responsible AI, we must recognise that a framework alone is insufficient. What’s truly needed is a seamless way to ensure that this ethical framework harmoniously melds with real-world applications.
